The College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic is the most exciting early-season college basketball tournament in the country. Twelve teams from across the nation will compete in the 13th annual event in 2013 with four of the top teams in the country serving as hosts. Host Round action takes place in November with the four hosts advancing to the Championship Rounds the following week at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. The remainder of the field will participate in a round-robin series at one of two sub host sites. Thus, every participating team is guaranteed four games.
The CBE Hall of Fame Classic was created in 2001 as the Guardians Classic, later known as the CBE Classic before being named the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in 2012. The CBE Hall of Fame Classic is a two-week tournament consisting of four regional sites hosted at campuses across the country.
The event is named after the College Basketball Experience, a highly interactive college hoops fan facility that opened October 17, 2007 and features the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. The College Basketball Experience is the nation's only facility that celebrates, in its entirety, the sport of men's collegiate basketball. In its first year of operation, the College Basketball Experience played host to over 100,000 visitors. The tournament was initially established in 2001 as the Guardians Classic, in partnership with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). www.CollegeBasketballExperience.com
The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame was founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation, Inc., to honor and celebrate those who have made extraordinary contributions to the game of men’s college basketball. Located at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Mo., the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame inducted its first class in November, 2006, with a Founding Class consisting of Dr. James Naismith, who invented the game; former University of North Carolina head coach Dean Smith; Oscar Robertson, considered by many to be the most outstanding all-around player in the history of college basketball while playing at Cincinnati; Bill Russell, who led the University of San Francisco to two NCAA championships and is one of the game’s greatest defensive players; and John Wooden, an All-America player at Purdue and long-time coach at UCLA, where he led the Bruins to 10 NCAA titles, including seven in a row.
Each year, a Blue Ribbon committee, composed of long-time coaches, administrators, former players, broadcasters and basketball writers selects a class of inductees including players, coaches and contributors. The Founding Class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame includes all individuals who have been previously inducted for men’s college basketball into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The NABC holds its annual convention and exhibition each spring at the host city of the NCAA men’s Final Four. Over 3,500 NABC members converge on the Final Four city to engage in five days of meetings, professional development, social events and the Final Four.
The NABC engages in many efforts to enhance the college basketball experience for players, coaches and fans. The association’s website, www.NABC.com, features the activities of the NABC and also serves as a worldwide resource for information concerning basketball and coaching.
